Student News March 2010
WELCOME…
...to the March edition of the EIS Student News, the online newsletter for student members of the EIS. As we approach Easter, I know many of you are busy with dissertations and placements, and I really hope you're all doing well. Just remember that any time you need advice or information about your course, or teaching in general, you can email me on the address below.
THRESHOLD MAGAZINE
You should all now have a copy of the EIS student magazine, Threshold. This magazine is packed full of useful information about EIS Societies, the job cuts situation, as well as advice on placements and the induction year. If you haven't received a copy of Threshold in the post by now, please get in touch with me and I'll make sure you get one.
EIS WEBSITE
The EIS is committed to improving lines of communication between the union and its members. Consequently, the website is currently being refreshed to make it more accessible and user friendly.
You can also now follow the EIS on Facebook (via “Educational Institute of Scotland” page) and on Twitter (via “EIS union” page). Plus, check out the early improvements of the website at: http://www.eis.org.uk
INDEPENDENT GTC SCOTLAND
The EIS has welcomed the announcement that the GTC Scotland will in future have an independent status. EIS General Secretary, Ronnie Smith, states that “the GTCS willnow be able to carry out its work as an independent guardian of teacher professionalism in Scotland”. If you would like to comment on this issue, feel free to get in touch.
‘WHY MUST OUR CHILDREN PAY' CAMPAIGN
After the march and rally on the 6th March, the EIS is continuing its campaign to fight back against proposed budget cuts in Scottish education. As student members, this campaign is incredibly important to you because the cuts will likely result in fewer jobs for newly qualified teachers in Scotland for several years. There is also likely to be severe cuts in the intake of student teachers over the next few years, which we feel will be detrimental to Scottish education. The Government should work on stimulating demand for new teachers, rather than cutting the supply.
OVER AND OUT
That’s all for the March edition of the Student News. As always, feel free to get in touch at any time to discuss any of the issues above. Thanks, Joanna.
